Render Farm - Configure FTP Voyager To Download Changed Files

Overview

There are a number of FTP clients that are capable of downloading files from an FTP server on a schedule. This is of great benefit to render farm users, because it allows you to download your frames as they become available.

We have taken a little bit of time to put together this document that details how to go about configuring one FTP client to download your files from your ResPower account. Enjoy!

  • GET FTP Voyager

FTP Voyager is available from www.ftpvoyager.com

Note: The guys at RhinoSoft (publishers of FTP Voyager) were quite helpful in working out the kinks in this tutorial, and at a time when we were merely evaluating their shareware package. This devotion to support is commendable and we thank them for it.

  • Add the ResPower FTP Server

In FTP Voyager, bring up the Site Profile Editor by choosing "Edit -> Site Profiles" from the menu.

Tell FTP Voyager that you want a new site by clicking the New Site button, and then fill in the appropriate information. Note that you must use the same User ID that you use to connect to the ResPower web server. Once you have filled in the appropriate information, press "Close"

Verify that you can connect by clicking the "Connect" button on FTP Voyager's main window, selecting the ResPower FTP site from the profile manager, and clicking the "Connect" button.

  • Schedule Automatic Downloads

Launch the FTP Voyager Scheduler by choosing "Schedule ->Start/Show FTP Voyager Scheduler..." from the menu.

Create a new scheduled task by choosing "Edit -> New" from the FTP Voyager Scheduler menu.

    Click on "Select"

Find and select the ResPower site profile, then click "OK".

Click on the "Schedule" tab, and set it up to run "Daily," and every 1 days. It should be set to start about 30 minutes from the current time. Then click on "Advanced".

Schedule the task to not have an end date, to run for an hour, and to repeat once an hour. Make sure to set the duration to 24 hours.

Click on the ResPower task, and then the action list. This will have the effect of highlighting the action list.

Create a new action by choosing "Edit -> New" from the FTP Voyager menu.

Configure the new action to "Synchronize Local Folders". The remote file or folder should be "/renders/", and the local file or folder is the location on your machine where you want the renders to show up. Configure the action to not ignore folders and files starting with anything.

Click OK, and then OK again. You should be good to go!
