How To: Install FileZilla

Overview

The ResPower Super/Farm™ proudly supports the use of free software, including FileZilla, to access its service.

This tutorial discusses how to install FileZilla, and to configure it for use with the ResPower Super/Farm. You can obtain a printer-friendly version of this page by clicking here .

Before we get started, there are some minor things to cover:

  • If your computer belongs to a corporation with an IT department or network administrator, please contact the appropriate individual there to get whatever permissions may be necessary to install FileZilla at your facility.
  • FileZilla is a Windows-only application. We have not yet written a comparable tutorial for Macintosh-based FTP clients. Hopefully that will change in the near future.
  • FileZilla is free software. ResPower will assist you in configuring it to work with the ResPower.com site. If you want to use it for other purposes, please do not ask for our assistance. There are support forums available at the FileZilla homepage for that purpose.

There are a few simple steps involved with installing FileZilla:

  • Navigate the FileZilla Website to Get the Latest Version
  • Download the latest version
  • Install the latest version
  • Configure FileZilla to work with ResPower.com

Navigate the FileZilla Website to Get the Latest Version

First, open the following page in a separate browser: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/ (Note: If your browser supports frames, and most do, simply clicking on the link will open it in a new window.)

Once on the FileZilla page, simply click on the "Download" link as highlighted in figure 1.

This brings you to a list of FileZilla-related packages. We aren't particularly interested in the FileZilla Server.

You only need to worry about the System DLL updater if you are still running Windows 95. Unfortunately, we do not have time to write a tutorial on installing this; the steps for downloading it are quite similar to the steps for FileZilla itself.

Of course this means that what we are interested in is of course FileZilla itself. Click on the Download link as highlighted in figure 2.

On the next SourceForge page, we are presented with tons of options. Because FileZilla is free software, you have the option of downloading all kinds of extra goodies, like the source code (FileZilla_xxx_src.zip), an MD5 hash to verify that your download is valid and secure (FileZilla_xxx.md5), a debug build (FileZilla_xxx_dbg.zip) and even a version without an installer (FileZilla_xxx.zip).

But you don't really care about any of that - you just want a normal installation program. So click the highlighted file from figure 3.

Sourceforge will now give you a list of mirrors for FileZilla. Because the software is free, servers and bandwidth are provided by groups that wish to sponsor your access to it. Each of these servers is called a mirror. At this point, you get to choose which mirror to go with. The mirror you choose is very likely unimportant, so just click on any random mirror in the highlighted list from figure 4.

Download the Latest Version

Once you have selected a mirror, you should see a page indicating that your download will begin shortly, and that if it does not, you should try a direct link to the download, or choose a different mirror. If it does not begin, the odds are that it is because that mirror is down, so you're best off choosing a different mirror. But most of the time, the download starts just fine.

We recommend creating a folder called

c:\install\FileZilla
to save the FileZilla installer. On a side note, we recommend storing all downloaded installers somewhere inside
c:\install
; this makes it easy to burn a CD or DVD to backup the installation programs for all of your programs. The recommended location for storing the FileZilla installer is highlighted in figure 5.

Install the Latest Version

Once the download has completed, open the installation program. Your browser (e.g., Internet Explorer) will typically give you the option of opening the file once it is downloaded. If it does not, navigate to the location where you downloaded it using Windows Explorer and double-click on it.

On the License Agreement page of the installer, click the "I Agree" button as indicated in Figure 6.

On the "Choose Components" page of the installer, click the "Next" button as indicated in Figure 7.

On the "Choose Install Location" page of the installer, click the "Next" button as indicated in Figure 8.

On the "Choose Start Menu Folder" page of the installer, click the "Next" button as indicated in Figure 9.

On the "General Settings" page of the installer, select "Do not use secure mode", select "Use XML file", and click the "Install" button as indicated in Figure 10.

FileZilla will now install. Wait for the install process to complete, as shown in Figure 11.

When FileZilla's installation is complete, the installation program's "Close" button will become enabled. Click it as indicated in Figure 12.

Configure FileZilla to work with ResPower.com

To launch FileZilla, click "Start", "Programs", "FileZilla", "FileZilla", as shown in Figure 13.

Open the Site Manager, and follow these steps, as indicated in Figure 14.

  • Click "New Site"
  • Name the new site "www.respower.com"
  • Set the "Host" field to "www.respower.com"
  • Set the "Port" field to "21"
  • Set the "Servertype" field to "FTP"
  • Set the "Logontype" field to "Normal"
  • Set the "User" field to your ResPower User Name.
  • Set the "Password" field to your ResPower Password.
  • Click "Save and Exit"

Open the FileZilla settings as inidicated in Figure 15.

Turn off directory caching as shown in Figure 16. This is necessary because your rendered files will be placed into your /renders/ folder, and if you have directory caching turned on, FileZilla may not list them for you.

Turn on "Always show hidden files" in the remote file list, as shown in Figure 17. This is necessary to ensure that FileZilla is able to delete your source folders. Maya, for example, tends to create hidden files during the render process that later prevent FileZilla from deleting files.

Connect to ResPower.com

Connect to www.respower.com as shown in Figure 18.

If you have connected properly, you should see the following folders listed in the remote file listing: ".." , "renders" , "source", as shown in Figure 19.

Troubleshooting

If you do not get a directory listing, it is most likely because you need to change your "Passive Mode" setting. Go back to the FileZilla Settings dialog, as shown in Figure 15. Change the Passive Mode setting as shown in Figure 20. If it is on, but you can't connect, turn it off and try again. If it is off, but you can't connect, turn it on and try again.
